Title: Are KODA Teens Different from Hearing Teens?

Description: Audrey Frank, clinical social worker, will moderate a panel of six KODA Teens who will share their insights, perceptions, and experiences related to their identity. This workshop is a follow up from last year’s session on this topic, and is geared towards parents, mental health professionals and school professions who wish to explore identity development, technology, educational, and cultural/linguistic needs of hearing children of deaf parents. Library resources will be on display.

This program is coordinated by Maryland Kids of Deaf Adults in conjunction with the Germantown Library. This event is free.

The Catalina Experience™

July 2 ~ 8, 2012

(Monday through Sunday)

The Catalina Experience™ will take you to White’s Landing ~ a gateway to Catalina Islands’s interior and positioned on the island’s most expansive beach. Included on their considerable acreage of pristine Southern California property are basketball courts, beach volleyball courts, large sports field for soccer & softball, and road access to the island’s interior. Their newly renovated dining hall and outdoor eating area are decorated with a Baja flair to give campers that “south of the border” feel.

Activites include organized aquatics programs such as snorkeling among kelp forests, kayaking, and oceanography; island ecology, hiking, astronomy, movies on the beach, nightly campfires; arts & crafts, sports; talent shows and many KODA related activities!

Early Bird Rate:

$600.00 per camper

If paid in full and post-marked on or before February 14, 2012

After February 15, 2012 – $650.00

If paid in full and postmarked on or before March 14, 2012

After March 15, 2012- $700.00

2nd Annual Kiddie Cabaret, January 21st!

You are invited to our 2nd annual Kiddie Cabaret to be held Saturday January 21st from 3 pm – 6 pm at Tyler Elementary. DJ Pumpin Archie will provide the music and there will be dancing, crafts, facepainting, and great food! You won’t want to miss it.

Please come in your favorite dance or musical costume to be entered in a raffle for fun prizes (prizes for kids only).

This event is open to the general public and all are welcome so bring the whole family! Invite your friends!

Admission is free for all ages. Food and drinks will be for sale. All proceeds go to support Tyler Elementary School.

Audrey Frank, clinical social worker, will give the presentation on

“Identity Development: Hearing Children of Deaf Parent”

Details on workshop and location will be announced soon.

Abstract:

Deaf parents will gain knowledge of identity development issues in order to best meet the hearing children of Deaf parents’ interests and needs. Research indicates that some hearing children of Deaf parents experience identity confusion, given that they may not know whether they have a hearing identity, deaf identity, bicultural identity, and/or coda (child of deaf adults) identity. Yet, the process of identity development of hearing children of Deaf parents is largely undefined. Various factors, such as language, culture, values, norms, and views of the deaf community and hearing society, communication, parent-child role confusion, being asked about their deaf parents, and grandparents’ roles have influenced the identity development of Codas. Specific strategies to cope with identity development will be shared through a PowerPoint presentation developed for deaf parents of hearing children. This will accomplish the crucial goal of educating such individuals in order to promote positive identity development among hearing children of deaf parents.

Dr. Dolittle

Excitement fins Rapunzel when the charming and handsome Prince Brian stumbles upon her remote abode, and she realized how much she has been missing! Brian dodges the witches to visit her new friend regurlarly and the two plot an escape. But the witch is crafty and casts a spell that sets the going couple on a difficult journey to happily ever after.

CHCDP Holiday Celebration

DATE: Saturday, December 17, 2011

LOCATION: Gallaudet Multi-purpose room (MPR) located in the Student Activity Center (SAC) next to Ely building.

TIME: 11am to 2pm

WHAT TO BRING:* one food dish, *one gift for each of your own children, and *$5 admission for each family

FOOD: All families must bring a mexican-themed potluck dish (enough for 20 people) to share. The committee will provide drinks and dessert.

GIFT: All families also need to bring one gift for their kids so that Santa who will be there can pass out one gift to them.

ACTIVITIES: We will also have activities for the kids in Flex A/B. Children facial sketches are available as well.

American Board of School Neuropsychology. He is the school psychologist at the Laurent Clerc National Deaf
Education Center’s Kendall Demonstration Elementary School. Whitaker has over 15 years of experience working
with deaf and hard of hearing children in educational settings. He received both his master’s degree in
developmental psychology in 1994 and his specialization in school psychology in 1996 from Gallaudet University.
